Education Center Staff


Director of Education: Carolyn Owens, MS-HCA,BSN,RNC-OB

Carolyn received her Bachelors of Science degree in nursing from the University of Tulsa and her Masters of Science-HealthCare Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX.  Carolyn comes to us with over 30 years of experience in the maternal child health arena with her last position as CNO for a 64-bed for-profit women’s hospital in Arkansas.  She worked for INTEGRIS Health for 30 years prior to that implementing the LDRP concept in Enid, Oklahoma achieving 85%-90% of the market share.  Carolyn has experience in cross-training of staff and development of training modules.  She has experience in teaching AWOHNN fetal monitoring courses and is a resource for her staff.

Carolyn is certified to teach BLS, NRP. 


Education Specialist: Shapley Bates, BSN, RN 

Shapley went to Tulsa Community College and received her Associates Degree in Nursing in 2003.  She completed her Bachelor’s Degree at Northeastern State University in 2008.  She has worked at OSU Medical Center for her entire nursing career as a bedside RN in ICU for 8 years, ICU Clinical Coordinator for 1 ½ years and ICU Assistant Clinical Resource Manager for 3 years. While working at the bedside in the ICU , she did travel nursing in various ICU’s at Integris Baptist OKC, Tahlequah City Cardiac ICU, and Hillcrest Medical Center Medical/Surgical ICU. She transitioned to the Education Department in May of 2015 as the Critical Care Education Specialist.

 Shapley is certified to teach BLS, ACLS, PALS. 


  Education Specialist: Tricia Durfey, MSN, RN

Tricia has over 20 years of nursing experience.  She began her career after obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK.   Tricia obtained her Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis on nursing education in 2006 from the University of Oklahoma.  She has 12 years of experience in undergraduate nursing education where she taught OB/Peds and Advanced Adult Health/Critical Care nursing courses.  Tricia also has worked as a neonatal/post-partum nurse and as a pediatric nurse. 

Tricia is certified to teach BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP


   Education Specialist: Marvel Donovan, MSN, RN,




Education Specialist: Phyllis Collins, MS, RN

Phyllis received her Bachelors of Science degree in nursing from Chicago State University and her Master’s Degree from Southern Nazarene University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Phyllis has 39 years of nursing experience, which includes Medical Surgical nursing, manager on a Medical Surgical Unit in Chicago, Illinois, and Director of Education at Hillcrest South for 13 years, and four years academia at Brown Mackie College and Langston University, which included curriculum development. She worked at Saint Francis Hospital as a float nurse for nine years and two years assisted with the opening and operation of the Laureate Psychiatric Hospital for adult, adolescent and geriatric patients. Phyllis active in the community, member of Sigma Theta Tau International, serves as an officer for Upsilon Pi Chapter, Beta Delta-at-Large Chapter, and member of the Eastern Oklahoma Black Nurses Association (EOBNA). BLS instructor for 15 years.

Phyllis is certified to teach BLS.
