Education Center Staff


Director of Education: Carolyn Owens, MS-HCA,BSN,RNC-OB

Carolyn received her Bachelors of Science degree in nursing from the University of Tulsa and her Masters of Science-HealthCare Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX.  Carolyn comes to us with over 30 years of experience in the maternal child health arena with her last position as CNO for a 64-bed for-profit women’s hospital in Arkansas.  She worked for INTEGRIS Health for 30 years prior to that implementing the LDRP concept in Enid, Oklahoma achieving 85%-90% of the market share.  Carolyn has experience in cross-training of staff and development of training modules.  She has experience in teaching AWOHNN fetal monitoring courses and is a resource for her staff.

Carolyn is certified to teach BLS, NRP.


Education Specialist: Tricia Durfey, MSN, RN

Tricia has over 20 years of nursing experience.  She began her career after obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK.   Tricia obtained her Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis on nursing education in 2006 from the University of Oklahoma.  She has 12 years of experience in undergraduate nursing education where she taught OB/Peds and Advanced Adult Health/Critical Care nursing courses.  Tricia also has worked as a neonatal/post-partum nurse and as a pediatric nurse. 

Tricia is certified to teach BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP


Education Specialist: Shapley Bates, BSN, RN 

Shapley went to Tulsa Community College and received her Associates Degree in Nursing in 2003.  She completed her Bachelor’s Degree at Northeastern State University in 2008.  She has worked at OSU Medical Center for her entire nursing career as a bedside RN in ICU for 8 years, ICU Clinical Coordinator for 1 ½ years and ICU Assistant Clinical Resource Manager for 3 years. While working at the bedside in the ICU , she did travel nursing in various ICU’s at Integris Baptist OKC, Tahlequah City Cardiac ICU, and Hillcrest Medical Center Medical/Surgical ICU. She transitioned to the Education Department in May of 2015 as the Critical Care Education Specialist.

 Shapley is certified to teach BLS, ACLS. 


Education Specialist: Crystal Jensen, MSN, RN

Crystal received her undergraduate education from Rogers State University (A.A.S. in Nursing, 1999) and Northeastern State University (BSN, 2011).  Crystal attended The University of Oklahoma, where she received her Master’s degree in Nursing Education in 2013.  After graduation in 1999, Crystal worked at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa for 7 years, primarily caring for high-risk antepartum, postpartum, gynecology and urology patients.  In 2007 she began working in community health nursing as a public health nurse at a county health department and in home health.  In 2011 she discovered a niche for nursing education and began teaching in an LPN-RN bridge program, later becoming the Director of Nursing and developed a new LPN program in Tulsa, before transitioning into her role at OSUMC in 2016.  She continues to teach nursing students as an adjunct faculty member in the Tulsa area.


Education Administrative Assistant: Vivian Dugger

Vivian joined the department in February 2010 and brought 30+ years experience in executive assistance and administration.  Vivian handles our AHA program and she is pleased to be our first point of contact for Education Center students.
